Dates for your diary!

Here's how it goes for the weekend! I hate to be the one to break the bad news but we have a double-header in Fife on Saturday! The 1's shall be playing at 11.30 in Rosyth so we shall be taking cars or helicopters to the game! So a 10 am meet at campus seems like the likely meet time! Nice! This is another one that we need to win, 7-0 would be nice again gentlemen! Ross has put up a team sheet so if you could tick or cross your names he would be most grateful!

Then at roughly the same time the 2's will be playing in Kirkaldy near Ballerie high or something? I don't know I'm only the messenger! This will be at about 12, the guy is going to get back to me tonight so I shall post the times as soon as I know them. Ray will also be putting a team sheet up, however, lets think sbout this one boys! Only tick ONE team sheet as the games will clash! Whichever game you're playing in please bring both kits.

Also, there is talk on the grapevine of a possible 1's match this weekend against Watsonians. Please keep ur eyes on the board, a team sheet for this could go up as late as Thursday. So please try and keep both days free this weekend. There is no reason that we can't make it a 9 point weekend if we field our best teams for these games. Although that task would have been easier if any of you had bothered to turn up to training last night! Especially the 2's after what was a rather poor defensive performance at the weekend! That's not a go at the defence but the whole team, midfield should be marking and tracking back and the strikers should try and get the ball back if they lose it! Defence start's with the strikers!

Anyway, keep your eyes on the board and on this page as there's likely to be lots of news concerning this weekends games both in terms of game and squad info. People who turn up to training greatly increase their chances of getting picked!

Nothing wrong with Fife, Mr Solman. Although it is true that Rosyth, Kirkcaldy (with a "c") and Dunfermalino are in the scummy end of the magnificent county.

Training - no bus! Krebs and co who went by car, if u came back to campus you didnt inform me. Instead I went down the union and won the Pub Quiz! Wee Mark had to do an essay too so nyah!

RE: Poor Defensive Performance.
Their first two were lucky, in 2nd half midfield came back only to see defence give the ball back to Stirling and striker (Bungle) got 2 goals. Even one of the defenders (Me) scored. Can no-one else hit a 16 from our 2nds squad. (That isnt meant to sound nasty) Its no hard, honest! If i can do it, any of u can!

Ah well, im no bitter. Just look 2 the weekend. Good luck to all who play for whichever team. Both 1sts and 2nds need points for survival and promotion respectively.

Then next week (according to scottish-hockey.org.uk), the biggie! A homecoming to my birthplace - Scumdee! A wee note to all of those going, Krebs may have already touched on this. Passports, injections, bulletproof vests - all necessary. If you aint playin' but can't be assed revising, come watch da game! My folks r gonna b there coz its just across the water from sunny tayport.
Lets go kick some Wanderers ass!(they play in red/black for future reference)

Ach weel, toodle pip and all that malarkey, ich bin offski fur some sleepy time time. GOOD TIE!!!!!!

Friar, your name is Friar, therefore it shall remain Friar, no amount of childish moaning and bitching shall change that one!
However, as for the call on Bulletproof Vests, make sure they are tight on or the minks will steal them. But they are an important tool, thanks to Friar for bringing that one up, its worth considering. Dungermaline is indeed the scummy end of Fife, but thats like saying that the Microbyte is the scummy end of the canteen, its all shite. Lets face it, if St Andrews kids have to go all the way to Madras to find a school that will accept them, and St Andrew is meant to be the "Cultural centre" then... yea... its pretty crap.
Bitching aside, its nice to see a new post, thanks to Captain Club Mr Solman for his efforts there, I am beginning to run out of things to moan about/slag off, so i better go and get some sleep.
I love you all

Friar, the defensive play was shite. I'm sure krebs will agree, we were stood behind the rest of the team, which somewhat resembled a herd of lost sheep! As soon as the other team get the ball you should be stood within inches of YOUR man. Not as many of the team did, stand around scratching your arse wondering why we haven't got the ball! The point is the defence shouldn't have to make a tackle. Several times the opposition had a 5 on 3 on us, doesn't take a mathematician to work out that therefore atleast 2 people weren't doing their job! Get it sorted!
Oh and there are buses that run to peffermill! We've all had to do it!

There may be buses that run to Peffermill but by the time we arrive adn wait for the usual minbus at 19.45, we might only then think, must not be a bus on and next 25 is at 8, followed by another bus which i forget the number of. Hence we wont' actually make it to training til about 9! Then we still have to bus it back at a far later rate and far lower frequency of buses! Hence not getting home til aboput 11.30! (and that's if we're lucky) SO if there ain't a lift, or a minibus you will not be seeing me at training. No way i am wasting £2 every week when i already paid £40 to join and match fees and training fees and minibus payment as well now. By far the most expensive club i am a member of.

As for Madras there ain't anything wrong with it! far higher quality than anything else fife has to offer. One of the best schools in scotland as well i reckon.

As for the Venue for the 2's game i think Mr Solman meant Balwerie High school. A big hole basically. Maybe go visit my gran afterwards.

In response to Mr Solmans post, i hve to agree with him, certain persons were AWOL from the defense for great periods in the game, they all have their reasons and believe that they were doing the right thing at the time, there is a problem here,we need to sort things out, why for instance does one of our centre backs need to take a sideline ball 5 yards from the opposition back line? Why, when one of our wayward centre backs (see common factor here?) is up the pitch, does no one come back to cover? etc etc. I hate to moan, but these things must get sorted out NOW or we are never going to have a team.
Also...
I am sorry about this, but I really have to stand with Neil , we already spend a fair bit of cash on club fees etc without a grumble, its worth it, at this part of a term, people dont have 2 quid to go spending on busses, if the minibus canna go, and lifts are scarce, then its kinda to be taken for granted that attendance wont be the best, however, Neil did tell me that he "couldnt be arsed" going, that sort of attitude must change.
As for Madras, Neil, Friar and LJ all went, I rest my case.

I love you all

MY THOUGHTS: GIVEN IN UPPER CASE!

As soon as the other team get the ball you should be stood within inches of YOUR man. Not as many of the team did, stand around scratching your arse wondering why we haven't got the ball!

BIT HARSH BUT DULY NOTED.

Oh and there are buses that run to peffermill! We've all had to do it!

I AGREE WITH KREBS AND MARY, £2 ON TOP OF MATCH FEES AND SPORTS UNION MEMBERSHIP/REGISTRATION! I KNOW THE CLUB HAS TO SURVIVE BUT THE BUS USED TO BE FREE! AND THE FACT THAT YES THE BUS (SERVICE BUS) WILL RETURN TO CAMPUS AROUND 11/12, WHICH IS A BIT MUCH.

why for instance does one of our centre backs need to take a sideline ball 5 yards from the opposition back line? Why, when one of our wayward centre backs....

NOT TRYING TO SOUND LIKE A DICK, BUT NO1 WAS HITTING POWERFULLY AND THROUGH MEN BAR ME (EXCEPTION OF LJ AND NICK A FEW TIMES)

NB. MADRAS WOULD RAPE ROBERT GORDONS, GIVEN HALF THE CHANCE.

The bus to training should cost you a quid so spending an extra one shouldn't be that troublesome! If you want to know why the hockey club is so expensive I can give you a breakdown of all our costs! They're fucking horrific, if you want to pay less then you're talking to the wrong person, there's fuck all I can do about it. The people you should be talking to are the Sports Union, if they built a hockey pitch on campus then our costs would drop dramatically, pitch hire would be about a third of what it currently is and there would be no bus charges.

If you can convince them to do that then we could drop our membership fee quite a bit. Also if you were to join a club outside the uni you'd be expected to provide ur own transport to every training session and match. You'd get a minimum of £3 taken off you every time you graced a pitch and your original joining fee would be in the region of £100. I hope this puts things in perspective for you! Therefore asking you to make your own way to training and spending the princely sum of £2 for one week really isn't that big a thing.

Also please remember that the people who take their time to organise pitches, buses, games and all the rest are doing it purely to allow themselves and everyone else to play hockey (big thank you to umpires). It takes a lot of time and effort, maybe afford them the courtesy of turning up? Or is that too difficult, same goes for ticking names off on team sheets, not very difficult but makes the captains life a fuck load easier come Friday night. On which note I'm pleased to say that people have responded well to the team sheet this week and I'd like to say thank you on behalf of the captains.

That's my rant over, please post any thoughts on it!

can we not try and use the outdoor pitch? my memory may be failing me but im sure there are hockey markings on the astro turf. if we can play on that, then itd stand us in good stead for playing on grass and would help overall with basic skills. but what do i know, im just a lowly fresher, my opinion doesnt count, eh sean?

ach well, nothin more to say really. have fun this weekend wherever you are! AG

just ignore that last post. I jsut looked at the fixture list! Duh! In theory the team we are playing is the worst one left to play in out half of the league boys, so let's go out there and show them how to play hockey!

Using the outdoor pitch is problematic for two reasons, the first, its shite, the second, if I am not somewhat mistaken, we are banned from it due to the immature actions of some of the "senior" club members? Member being the operative word here!
Lets start Lobbying the sports union to get a hockey pitch on campus, we need to stop talking about these things and start doing something, (What little we can) about it!

Sorry Friar but few things wrong with your post. It was intended that we were to play on that pitch but if you look closely you'll see the "grass" is too long to hit a ball anywhere. As for preparing yourselves for playing on grass, well grass is the past and you never play on it now (well except peebles). Finally there is no better way to improve stick skills than on astro because you can practise things without the worry of the ball bouncing etc. this is all just my oppinion of course and feel free to tell me if, in any way i am wrong.
Love ya

I can kinda see Friar's point, play on gras play anywhere sorta thing, but Rhona is right in that you are never gonna perfect your skills playing on grass due to the uneven surface.

Would be very ncie to dig up one of the football/rugby pitches and lay down a proper astro/water based pitch. However these things cost somewhere in the region of £80-100,000. And that's before u buy the hokcey goals, line markings and corner flags (admittedly alot less but it's all cost). And as the hockey club is in debt already i doubt the sports union would be willing to give us that much money. (I doubt they even have that much money!)

Alternately we could play on grass here, just stick a couple of goals somewhere and mark out a pitch, would save a heck of alot of money for the club and reduce joining fees etc but would comprimise on players training and such like with reduced effectivness.

So High prices but play at Peffermill or Cheaper to join but play on grass! That seems to be the options.

Good to see that I sparked some semi-lively hockey debate! In response to q's. The pitch on campus is worse than grass, the SHU won't let us play matches on it as it doesn't comply with their pitch standards (in other words, it is deemed worse than peebles' grass pitch). It also prevents players doing the basics that we try to teach at training, e.g. sticks down, as the ball bounces over it! it is also dangerous to play on it, as the ball sits proud the surface it is difficult to avoid undercutting it. It is also impossible to push or slap pass on it. Also, all the wednesday 1's players would refuse to train on it, also, it's not the greatest of advertisements to new players.

On Mary's points, we already have the goals etc. as they were all bought for that pitch just can't be used! As for the Sports Union buying a pitch, they don't give us the money for it, they do it themselves and then make a profit out of it by renting it out. As for not having the money for it, correct me if I'm wrong but they had the money to build one for the football team!

I like Krebs' idea of a protest or petition. Even if we promised to do some fundraising for it in return for a share of the profits? Nice little earner for the hockey club in the long term!

Suggestions and further points for discussion please!

Love Nick x

In addition to Nicks reply to Mary's rather fair comment, the sports union dont need to have the cash in hand, all they need is to be able to show a bank how they are going to make money from it and pay off the rather small (in the grand scheme of things) loan. As for the hockey team helping to fundraise? Can we concentrate on one thing, either Barbados or a pitch, we canna divide ourselves too much or nothing will be achieved of any merit. There are some basic facts:
The artifical pitch is not suitable,
grass is not suitable,
Peffermill is too expensive,
the hockey club must go on and grow,
There is one solution to this, get a pitch, a water based pitch of the Hockey Clubs specification will solve all these and make a bloody fortune for the Uni in the long term. Why are we debating this here? Can we not start debating this with the Sports Union, they dont read this, and if they do, I cant see them paying much heed. We need to get in their faces and make them realise how short sighted they are.
In the mean time, can I ask everyone to bear with things and get to peffermill as often as is humanly possible and to make a big effort and some sacrifices, its worth it. The hockey club should be no1 priority for all its members, the Uni will leave you after 4/5 or in Mackay's case, 34 years, but Hockey will be with you for life. (or until your old and shite).
Anyway I am beginning to lose track of this one...

I love you all

Most excellently put Krebs! I like the idea of a tour as it will end less than a week before my 21st so that gives everyone reason to beverage even more heavily than they were planning to!

The University should be able to afford a pitch without our help. Myself and other members of the committee shall be having a meeting with the Sports Union before the end of this year, you can be sure that we will let them know how important a pitch is to the development of hockey at Heriot-Watt.

However this doesn't mean that we'll get one! Afterall they have been planning to build a swimming pool since the University opened. Also we have to make the first and most mature move by showing the Sports Union that we deserve a pitch. Ways that we can do this include putting a stop once and for all to the internal bickering and backstabbing. And secondly by doing what we came here to do; playing some fucking good hockey. If we can create a friendly, successful sporting scene then we have a far stronger argument for better facilities and more money. We need to spend the rest of this year training hard and having good banter as a club so that next year when all competitions start we can give it our best from the start and actually go on and win stuff! It's not going to be easy and it's going to take a shitload of hard work. It just depends if people are willing to put in the effort in return for the rewards?
